Massachusetts_low_chest_dovetails1.jpgDovetailed drawers90 viewsI made the four drawers when I got home from the class. I used dividers to maintain the same spacing ratio on each of the drawers, even though the number of tails changed with each drawer.Sgt42RHRNov 12, 2016
Massachusetts_low_chest_back_view.jpgBacking boards84 viewsAll secondary wood in this piece is poplar. The backing boards have one coat of one-pound cut amber shellac on them. I was surprised that a couple of the boards were almost brown, unusual for poplar.Sgt42RHRNov 12, 2016
Massachusetts_low_chest_drawer_pull_hardware.jpgDrawer pulls80 viewsAll hardware was bright brass from Ball & Ball. I painted it all with gun bluing which turned it black, then I steel wooled and polished with Simichrome polish which left patina in the deep recesses and hard to reach spots. In this view, one can also see the effect of the dark glaze applied in the fillet of the thumbnail moulding around the drawers.Sgt42RHRNov 12, 2016

Virginia_corner_cabinet1.jpgEastern shore of Virginia corner cabinet167 viewsI began this two years ago in a class with Lonnie Bird at the Lonnie Bird School of Fine Woodworking, and just got back to finishing it up. These carpenters used elements they were familiar with in building homes in the Eastern shore. Glazed doors, arched top doors, raised panel doors, strong bases, fluted pilasters, set-back capitals, etSgt42RHRNov 07, 2016
waist_moulding_and_flutes.jpgWaist moulding and flutes124 viewsThe fluted pilasters in this piece are frequent details in Eastern shore of Virginia corner cabinets. The curve of each flute is reversed at the bottom which adds interest and helps direct the eye upward to the set-back capital and cornice.Sgt42RHRNov 07, 2016
Cornice_moulding_right_side.jpgCornice moulding detail right column97 viewsThe glaze which I applied and then removed between the 5th and 6th coats of one-pound cut shellac really causes the changes in the shape of the moulding to be much more noticeable.Sgt42RHRNov 07, 2016
bottom_door_arched_top.jpgArched top bottom doors89 viewsRaised panel and arched top raised panels are common features on Eastern shore Virginia corner cabinets.Sgt42RHRNov 07, 2016
glazing_on_top_door.jpgMuntins82 viewsThere are four rows and three columns of lights. A little dark oil-based glaze was applied at the fillets and then wiped away with a mineral spirits soaked rag, the detail of the moulding really jumps out with the shadow lines.Sgt42RHRNov 07, 2016
Glazed_door_arched_top.jpgArched top glazed door74 viewsArched top glazed doors were a common feature on Eastern shore Virginia corner cabinets. Sgt42RHRNov 07, 2016
cornice_moulding_left_side.jpgCornice moulding detail left column72 viewsThe cornice moulding is built up from three segments.Sgt42RHRNov 07, 2016
