TGOC_Oct2013_1.jpgTool Group Of Canada Meeting Oct 2013 haul21 viewsI picked up a few things.
Stanley jack rabbet, cute little hammer, reprint catalogue, combination stone, shaker pegs, awl, and dowel pointer from the dealer tables. Boxed stone from silent auction and a wrench and coping saw from the live auction.
2012_0016s.jpgWooden screw samples No 1-488 viewsNo.1 - Cutter in as-found condition. Off-the shelf dry birch dowelling, not rounded. V at minor diameter is a sharp, but rough corner. Magnification shows tearing there.
No.2 - Cutter as-found. Off-the shelf dry maple dowelling, not rounded. No change in condition at minor diameter.
No.3 - Cutter honed, hook removed & out-cannel formed. Less tearing in the rounded bottom of the V.
No.4 - No change from No.3
2012_0019s.jpg5/8in vintage boxwood screw box & sample No.657 viewsThis screw (No.4) was cut in off-the-shelf maple dowel, with no lubrication of any kind. It was not pre-sized or rounded. Note sharpness of the crests on the thread. The little hook has been removed from the cutter heel. The cutter is a very tight fit in its mortise. It takes considerable force to budge it.Schwartz
2012_0030cs.jpgBLO or Paraffin Wax?50 viewsBoth screws were turned to 0.60in ( 0.025in undersize), then roundered, resulting in flattened crests on the thread. No.7 , the top screw, was cut after wiping the sized dowel down with BLO. The lower screw No.6 was lightly rubbed with paraffin wax after sizing. I fully expected a failure on this one, as it started badly, breaking out 3 inches of twisty grain, and forcing a restart.Schwartz
hanger1.jpgFireplace tool hanger53 viewsholes drilled in the mortar of the fireplace, insert dowel and drive in mounting spikes, splitting the dowel and wedging the spikes. Really challanging to get the wave consistent nicknaylo

spearjackson_button.jpgspearjackson button81 viewsThere is a decorative button on the top horn which tops off a dowel that runs down through the handle, presumably to make the handle stronger. You can't read it in this photo, but on it is printed: Patent (I can't make out all of the numbers)

The button may be ivory, it has that patina and checks in it, but it could be some other material. The pin holding the button in place may be brass.
02_2011_6851s2.jpgBottom of carcase showing construction details102 viewsBottom panel is about 1/2 in. thick. Its margins were built up with 3/8 in. of secondary wood, and the two were dovetailed to the sides. Very frugal use of material.
Holes near the four corners of the base corresponded to dowels in the top of the missing stool upon which, I believe, the chest originally stood.
14_IMG_4293s.jpgRight front edge showing filled hole.87 viewsThese holes held dowel pegs which supported the missing columns.Schwartz
13_IMG_4270s.jpgFront corner detail102 viewsTwo crudely-filled 3/8 in. round holes in each front corner post suggest the missing columns were supported by dowel pins through the front of the chest. The columns were 'engaged', having a small flat on their hidden side. Note cock-beading on drawer fronts. Schwartz
