Massachusetts_low_chest_front_left_oblique_view.jpg
Massachusetts_low_chest_front_left_oblique_view.jpgLeft oblique view108 viewsThis is a western Massachusetts low chest, more plain and primitive than a Boston-made version. I used Moser's Honey Amber Maple waterborne aniline dye to get the color of aged maple. I applied a single coat of gloss wiping varnish after applying the dye. Next, I applied five coats of one-pound cut amber shellac. I then carefully applied and scrubbed away with mineral spirits a dark glaze in the fillets, corners, etc. to accentuate the moulding details. Last a sixth coat of one-pound cut amber shellac.Sgt42RHR
Massachusetts_low_chest_back_view.jpg
Massachusetts_low_chest_back_view.jpgBacking boards78 viewsAll secondary wood in this piece is poplar. The backing boards have one coat of one-pound cut amber shellac on them. I was surprised that a couple of the boards were almost brown, unusual for poplar.Sgt42RHR

Cornice_moulding_right_side.jpgCornice moulding detail right column94 viewsThe glaze which I applied and then removed between the 5th and 6th coats of one-pound cut shellac really causes the changes in the shape of the moulding to be much more noticeable.Sgt42RHR

The wood is from a tree that grew in front of Walton United Church. The tree was killed by a lightning strike a few years ago, and I acquired some wood when the tree was taken down. Counted 130 rings on the stump.

bagpipe_case_crotch_grain_top.jpg
bagpipe_case_crotch_grain_top.jpgWalnut crotch grain lid125 viewsThis lid came from an off-cut from another project. I sawed it in half, book matched it, planed it to 1/2 inch. I think the figure looks like one of those Siamese fighting fish. Five coats of 1 pound cut amber shellac, an ebony glaze wiped on and off, and then a couple of coats of satin wiping varnish.
