Round-Edge Lumber
Boards having attached bark on both edges.
Rounder
A tool used to make dowels or round stock.
Rounding
The first step in the turning process after a workpiece is mounted in the lathe. Rounding is performed at low speeds to eliminate sharp corners in preparation for the initial shaping operations.
Router
Basically a high speed motor with handles and an adjustable base with a collet that accepts profile bits to cut dados, rabbets, or shapes.
Router Plane
A plane used to smooth the bottom of a recess, which is a cut indentation in a piece of wood.
Rub
A method of attaching glue blocks to inside corners with hide glue. The blocks are covered with hide glue and placed in the inside corner and rubbed back and forth. As the glue thins into a uniform coating the friction increases and the cohesive properties hold it in place until the adhesive properties develop as it dries.
Rub Bearing
A ball bearing rub collar near the top or bottom of a spindle shaper that is used to keep the workpiece a fixed distance away from the cutters.
Rubbing Compound
A commercially prepared mixture of abrasive powder and lubricant that is used for a final rubbing of a finished surface.
Rule Joint
A joinery method used in drop leaf tables where the tabletop has a convex profile and the leaf has a concave cut. The two pieces are joined by a hinge.
Rung
A horizontal member of a piece of furniture such as a chair. It connects and strengthens the legs of a chair. Also called a Stretcher.
Runout
1. The amount of wobble in a shaper or router. 2. (Grain slope) Grain deviation across a board. Measured as a ratio of cross distance to length, such as 1 inch in 12 inches.
Runs
A defect that occurs when too much finishing material is applied to a vertical surface.
Rush
A natural, grass-like fiber used to weave post-and-rung chair seating. Two varieties are cat tail (Typha latifolia) and bulrush (Scirpus lacustris). "Fiber rush" is an imitation product, made of twisted brown paper.
Ryoba Noko Giri
