Galootaclaus web site open! |
|
After this many years, you'd think a tradition as rich as Galootaclaus would have its own web site, right? Well, at long last .. it's here... All things related to Galootaclaus may be found on http://www.galootaclaus.com We'll start with a discussion area ... the list has had fair amount of banter so far and the listmoms have graciously let it go on.. well, galootaclaus.com is the place to take those discussions without fear of veering too far astray on the list at large. The signup period will open on or about November 1st .. we'll kick off the event a little earlier this year to help some of the those packages get to their destination before the traditional Christmas Day.

Video Conversion Service Live! |
|
Video is the next wave on the net and we're still early in the game. To make things a bit simpler, we've lit up a menu links for converting digital video (and then retrieving your converted file!) to the registered user menu. Pretty much any format will work. The Flip Video cameras (a very nice little entry level gadget for camera impaired folks like your host!) output .avi files. Your camera may spit out something different. Most likely, the conversion service will handle it and give you back a nice tidy Flash Video (.flv) file which we would then like you to place into the video gallery. Enjoy! --Jim

Sometimes you just gotta step back and say "thanks". The response to the videos has been very positive and it appears to be just a matter of days until we'll get a peek into shops near and far. It's something I thought about a long time ago, but just didn't have the time to work through the details. Sometimes you get lucky and your "real work" tranfers easily to to pet projects. And something I don't get around to saying much, but it is truly appreciated is the periodic donation from a galoot. Between those and a couple interesting non monetary donations, I've been able to assemble the Galoot Central project into something I have a lot of confidence in over the long haul. Durability is certainly something this group can appreciate. So .. thanks. Thanks for your comments (and criticisms!). Thanks for the donations. Thanks for just being who you are. ---Jim

So... here's just a bit more on use of the video gallery. First, a quick terms of use-ish statement. Like the image gallery, things loaded to the video gallery are public and could very well be syndicated and appear elsewhere. This is the internet.. no assumption of privacy should ever be assumed! Also, if you look starting today, I've added a couple videos from YouTube. This is painfully easy and I encourage the users here to do the same if you spend any time looking for video content online. (keep it relevant though!!). To do this, you just grab the url that YouTube (and others) give you to stick in an email and click the "Add Videos" button instead of Upload. Paste the url into the box, click apply, then put it in a category. Currently, there are just two categories .. shop tours and how-tos. Looking for suggestions for more. The video wave on the net is really still in its infancy. Obviously, as galoots, we're not looking to be on the leading edge of much, but this is just too good to pass up!

The video gallery has been lit up and just to encourage folks, I went ahead and posted a quick and dirty one minute walk through my shop. The gadget supports both local (you upload) videos and stuff coming from places like YouTube. Couple things for folks interested in putting their own video online. First, let's keep them short .. about 2 minutes or less. Format - I used a Flip Video camera to do mine and then converted the raw video to a Flash Video (.flv) file. The makes them nice and small (22 Mb raw, 2 Mb converted...) for uploading without really sacrificing quality (not that I had much in this one to begin with .. buy hey, first time I've ever used my kid's camera!) Like the image galleries, these are public view, but posting requires registration. I'll put the service online soon that will let you upload and convert a video to the right format. Riva makes a free encoder you can use if you are inclined to forge ahead!

Event Link Retired/New Feature Coming! |
|
Some experiments fail. Some projects never get legs. Oh well .. seemed like a good idea (and still does!), but we've never been able to keep the event calendar up to date so rather than have not very good information, we've just made it go away. If some galoot out there wants to step in and be the calendarmeister, we'll happily make a spot for it again! But how about some exciting news!! We all like to see each other's shops. There are many shop photos in Galoot Image Central. Well.. I think the time has come for some brief walking tours of shops! In the coming weeks, we'll bring up a service to convert and optimize digital videos and upload them for display on Galoot Central. Look for Jim's shop soon!!

We've had a lot of new members lately! Are you a new (or old!) registered user who wants to post pictures? Read on! 1. Log in 2. Select Image Central from Main Menu
Stage 1 - need an album to put your pictures in
3. On the GIC screens, ignore the top set of menu items, choose Create/Order My Albums 4. Album manager will open, click New 5. New Album will appear above but don't go there just yet - below there is an input box that says "New Album" 6. Highlight it and type over it with the name for your new album 7. Click "Apply Modifications", then click OK on the pop up confirm dialog 8. System will create your album and tell you so 9. Click "Continue"
Stage 2 - putting pics in your album
10. Now in the top set of menu items, choose "Upload File" 11. File dialog will open, browse and choose up to 5 pics from your local drive, click Continue * special note about the files ... web browsers typically know about 3 flavors of image files .. GIF, JPG, and PNG. For Windows users, this is taken for granted and your image software will put a file extension on ... ie, image.gif, image.jpg, image.png. Mac users - you will probably need to name the files with the extension manually .... something called "image" is quite valid on the Mac, but a web browser won't know what to do with it, so when you save, tack on .gif, .jpg, or .png depending on what format you are saving. 12. File(s) will be uploaded .. another success dialog, click Continue 13. On next screen, select your album from the drop down, give a title and description 14. Click Continue 15. Another pop up, click OK
You did it!
It gets easier as you do more!!!

Well hi to all Galloots. I have been wanting a nice Disston saw. I curantly use a Japanes saw. Well the other day while out on the job I had some time to peruse the local haunts. I had never been in this store and thought well maybe. So I walk into the store with a litle intrepidation thinking another glass shop. So I asked do you have any tools? The man says sure come this way. Now it was 90 F out side and wouldnt you know it the tools are in the un airconditioned side.

Limited Advertising Opportunities |
|
Traffic on Galoot Central has now steadied at a pace (about 3500 hits a day) where it is reasonable to offer paid advertising to folks who have a use for such and appreciate the ability to be visible to a very targeted audience. Contact Jim E directly for further information. Rates will be minimal - this ain't to put food on the table, but rather to make sure I'm covering ongoing costs from funds other than those used to populate my shop with items from the FMM listings on the Porch! Oh, if you are already a Google advertiser, please feel free to send me keywords that can help trigger those ads here as well. That I will happily do for free!
