My First Disston Saw PDF Print E-mail

Well hi to all Galloots. I have been wanting a nice Disston saw. I curantly use a Japanes saw. Well the other day while out on the job I had some time to peruse the local haunts. I had never been in this store and thought well maybe. So I walk into the store with a litle intrepidation thinking another glass shop. So I asked do you have any tools? The man says sure come this way. Now it was 90 F out side and wouldnt you know it the tools are in the un airconditioned side.

I get to the small corner, the tool section. I was quite amazed at the selection. I started with a knuckle blok plane, Stanley rule and level era. At least the Iron says this. I havvnt done my home work on this one yet. I allso picked up a small moulding plane. It has a very small bead detail. Then in the corner there was a leaning pile of saws. I say to my self I wonder if any are Disston? Then I see this little bump on the end of the saw. My heart skipped a beat. I looked at the medalion and yes it says Disston. How ever being new to saws I did't recognize the symbol in the center. So I gave the saw a quick wiggle. Music filled the small cubicle. I thought this must be a good one. So I though how much could they want for this one. The price wasnt on this item but he Stanley block plane was only 10.00. So as I was about to leave I noticed an old bench mounted flared tool. It was in the dollar box. It is missing the screws but still a neat find. Must do some research on this on as well. So I have what I want and I practily crawl out of the back Un airconditioned room. The first thing they ask me is how did you stand it down ther so long? I just laughed and asked what kind off deals are we working today?

Well the Plane 10.00 and the Flare tool 1.00 and the moulding plane 7.50. So I asked how much is the saw? I allmost fell over when they said $3.00.

After leaving and heading for home I kept thinking about that saw. I reasly love old planes but this saw had the ring and the odd shape. I new the wood was different but I was to find out that it is a Disston #12 and the handle is Apple wood. The distonian web site shows this to be a top of the line Saw. The blade has some surface rust .

I read that you can use Brass polish to remove it but hought I would ask the brethren befor I tackle this one. I tried it out on so pressure treated pine. It cleaned it some but not enough. The blade seems sharp. Well not dull any way. Well this is My gloat for the week I would be interested in any imput you people might have. All for now, Kelly
