B

Bound water
Water within the cell wall of wood. Loss of bound water results in dimensional shrinkage.
Bow
A distortion in a board that causes the face to curve from end to end. If you place the face of a bowed board on a flat surface the center of the board will rest on the surface while the ends are above the surface.
Bow Saw
Frame saw with tensioned blade at one end. Generally used for curved work on a larger scale than appropriate for a coping saw.
Bow-back Windsor
A Windsor side-chair with a back support consisting of a single, looped bow having both ends mortised into the plank seat. Five to 11 vertical spindles fill in the back rest area. Sometimes called a "loop-back" Windsor. An English bow-back is similar to an American sack-back.
Box joint
A corner joint made up of interlocking "fingers". See Finger Lap Joint.
Boxing
The wear strip of a harder substance, normally boxwood, let into a wooden or transitional plane's sole in order to make the high points of the sole wear longer.
Brace, Bit brace
A hand-held boring tool that consists of a pommel, crank and chuck. Usually used with auger bits or spoon bits, but sometimes adaptable to other boring devices.
Brad
A small finishing nail up to 1" long.
Brake
English country craft term for any type of simple holding device. One example is a pair of narrow forked branches, useful for holding stock when riving chair parts.
Branding Iron
A tool for burning a name or logo on to wood, electric or flame heated.
Breasted saw
A hand saw which has the cutting edge filed to a slight convex curve. This is sometimes done on both crosscut and rip saws, and is said to improve the power of the cut at the beginning and end of the stroke.
Bristle
Any natural filament used in brush manufacture. In common usage can describe any type of filament, either natural or synthetic, used in a brush.
Brush Marks
Parallel ridges left by a brush in a brushed on coating.
Burl
Bulges and irregular growths that form on the trunks and roots of trees. Burls are highly sought after for the incredible veneer they yield.
Burn-In Stick
A type of filler used to repair defects in finished wood surfaces. They come in a variety of colors to match the existing finish. A heated knife is used to apply the filler. Also called shellac stick or lacquer stick.
Burnish
To polish or form a burr edge on a hard tool by rubbing it with another hard tool.
Burnished Surface
A surface that has a smooth, polished look.
Burr
1. A minute metal flap formed on the opposite side of an edge during grinding or honing. A burr indicates that abrasion has taken place at the arris. 2. A raised ridge of metal used on a scraper to remove wood.
Butt Hinge
A hinge composed of two plates attached to abutting surfaces of a door and cabinet and joined by a pin.
Butt Joint
A woodworking joint where the edges of two boards are placed against each other.
Butt Swell
Is the portion of the tree at ground level to about chest height where most large trees are cut when they are felled. This wood usually contains interesting grain.
Button Shellac
The least refined grade of shellac. It is a dark brown color.
