malletspaltflat.jpgOsage Orange Mallet spalt and flat158 viewsAnother view, this one showing the white sapwood area (not much softer than the heartwood, still solid enough for some chiselling) and the darker brown area i left flat (so as not to make it too small in diameter). The flat will keep it from rolling on the bench!madwing

IMG_1132.jpgLeather mallets60 viewsHere are several leather mallets I made as an experiment. The second one down has a copper plate at the top and weighs about 2 1/2 pounds. I learned that this is too heavy for carving, but is a good weight for a Whoop-ass mallet (just say TM Scott Grandstaff.)
The others have aluminum plates and weigh just slightly more than 1 pound, which is an excellent weight for general carving.Oldmillrat

IMG_1753.jpgMallets58 viewsI made this set of mallets from barbell weights. The single handle is interchangeable into all the heads. This required some machine work.
I personally do not like interchangeable handles on anything. I prefer that every tool have its own handle.Oldmillrat
