22_IMG_0084s.jpgDrawer bottom92 viewsWear strips attached to the drawer bottoms are made up of diagonally sawn strips. This was done to prevent cross-grain splitting of drawer bottoms. Can anyone suggest where this technique originated? I don't believe I've seen it elsewhere. Sadly, a nail through the bottom into the back ensured a split in any case.Schwartz

33_cropped.JPGSplitting Headaches283 viewsAfter rolling the tree, I was able to kerf it on the opposite side and split it. The split wasn't flat, of course, and the convex section is on the top. The concave section is in the middle, after I split the small pieces at the bottom off of it. After further sectioning, I have five irregular eight foot planks, varying from 6-8" thick and about 18" wide, lots of small pieces, a sore back and swollen knuckles.Gary K
