2013-08-31_Gasforgetest1.jpgGas forge test24 viewsGreg Hahn was kind enough to bring a stack of Freon tanks to the last BagAthon (along with all the wooden wine boxes) and almost a year later, I got a small gas forge set up and running.

Couple of tweaks to the set up. Need to add a choke and a quick connect to the burner and coat the inside with a refractive coating.

The_Samples.jpg
The_Samples.jpgThe Working Ends120 viewsSix examples made up using the supplier's standard whisk broom and cake tester designs, with corn straw packed per my request. The supplier is wondering whether buyers would want the somewhat decorative wrapping, as losing it might knock of a dollar or two in price. I say keep it, as it is comfortable in use.Charlie Driggs

The_Working_Ends.jpgThe Working Ends112 viewsMuch easier to see the differences in the three corn straw mixes provided for testing in this shot. The most tightly packed and best performing example is third from left. The poorest performing, but still effective example is second from left. The other four showed various degrees of difference between the two, although the two on the right end are made the same way.Charlie Driggs
Post_Test_Wear_Evidence.jpg
Post_Test_Wear_Evidence.jpgPost-Test Wear Evidence111 viewsthe thick straw example on the bottom performed the best, and showed a little stain of mahogany dust. The thin straw example also worked, but with more effort and time, and a less uniform result. It was apparent that the test only involved part of the face on both.Charlie Driggs

shootbdused.jpgNew shooting board in use.143 viewsAfter running it in (planing the edge without any board on it to create the lip along which the bottom edge of the plane sole rides), I tested it on a cutoff of the mahogany I'd made the edge molding on. My machinist friend, Dave, surface ground the iron of the Bedrock 606, so I have a great edge on it...leading to see-through end-grain shavings that crumble pretty quickly to dust when rubbed between the fingers.madwing

testmouldingprof.jpgTest Molding for Vise Chop - first real use of hollows and rounds130 viewsI made this as a test of H&R usage, after rebating and playing around. I am making a mahogany vise chop for my newly-mounted Wilton 76A right-angle face vise, and wanted (a) to give it some distinction, and (b) to get in some practice with the H&Rs I got from Jim O'Brien for Galootaclaus in 2010.madwing
