Galoot Glossary
Japanese Plane. Characterized by wood construction and cutting on the pull stroke rather than push.
The groove left in a board when cut by a saw blade.
A small piece of wood that is used to strengthen or accent the corner joints of mitered projects. With keyed joints, the project is usually assembled and glued together first. Then, after the glue has dried, the keyways are cut and the keys are glued into position. Keys can be virtually any shape (square, dovetail, "butterfly", etc.) and are, in most cases, visible after assembly.
Keyhole Saw (Pad Saw)
A long, tapered, thin saw blade held in a handle at one end.
A dangerous situation whereby a rotating blade, cutter or disc "grabs" a workpiece and throws it backwards in the direction of rotation. Kickback is best prevented by using accurate alignment and the appropriate safety devices such as the upper saw guard and feather boards, and by feeding your work-piece into the cutter slowly without forcing and sup-porting the workpiece properly.
In lumber drying, a kiln is a room or building where temperature, moisture, and the amount of air circulating are controlled to dry wood.
Kiln Dried
Lumber that has been dried in a Kiln. Usually 6-8% mc. Because wood is hygroscopic, kiln dried wood will pick up moisture whenever it is in a moisture bearing environment. (See Kiln)
Knife Hinge
Shaped like scissors. One half of hinge mounts to top edge (or bottom edge) of door. Other half mounts to horizontal cabinet member directly above (and below) door.
A design feature that allows a piece of furniture to be easily disassembled by the use of special hardware or joinery.
A part of the tree where a branch has been overgrown by the tree and incorporated into its trunk. A "tight knot" is firmly attached to the surrounding wood. A "loose knot" has a layer of bark between it and the surrounding wood and may eventually fall out leaving a hole in the board. The grain pattern changes sharply around a knot, making it difficult to plane.
