malletspaltflat.jpgOsage Orange Mallet spalt and flat158 viewsAnother view, this one showing the white sapwood area (not much softer than the heartwood, still solid enough for some chiselling) and the darker brown area i left flat (so as not to make it too small in diameter). The flat will keep it from rolling on the bench!madwing

malletend.jpgBagathon Mallet173 viewsThe business end of the mallet. I still need to plane the end clean, and sand to finish. Note how much lighter it looks than the upright pic. It's very chatoyant wood, changes color from the orangey-yellow to browny-yellow depending upon how you hold it.madwing

malletupright.jpgOsage Orange Mallet187 viewsI turned this, with much help from Larry McVoy, at this year's Bagathon. It's from a piece of Osage Orange (Bois D'Arc) sent to me by Roger Birkhead back in '04. About 4" diameter at the mallet, a little longer than a foot overall. Needs cleanup at the small end, that's what's left after parting.madwing

axforging.jpgA Blacksmith's Apprentice169 viewsAlexander with Michael at Michael's portable "Know Nothing" forge. He was thrilled to be able to try "blacksmithing"...Thanks, Michael! In this picture also stands Greg "Thor" Isola, wondering why Alexander's not using Tom Holloway's 38 oz. hammer.madwing

axnail.jpgFor want of a nail...144 viewsOne was made. Alexander with his nail, his first attempt at forging. He'd asked me if he could do some "blacksmithing" a couple months back, and when I told him he'd be able if he came to the Bagathon, he was on it like a kid offered a trip to the candy store. Michael (to the left) looks on his newest apprentice with great pride; he was a great help to Alexander, and a great teacher, very patient and made it fun. Also in this picture, host Larry McVoy's eldest, whose name I think is Troy.madwing
