split_nut_tool_002.jpgsplit (spanner) nut tool283 viewsa defective turned cocobolo knob and a hunk of cast brass cut off a stair rail mount adapted for something else, a little epoxy glue and file work -- and its a very handy split nut tool. Charlie Driggs

shopinventoryOct05-41s.jpgsawtill #1282 viewsThis was a one-hour project, using trapezoidal plywood sections to provide stability, and replaceable strips of softwood as spacers/hangers. Quickly overrun with saws, it now only houses my better backsaws, with the bench saws now in till #2.Charlie Driggs

sawtill_no2a.JPGThe new sawtill (#2)237 viewsI might relocate the backsaws from sawtill #1 by adding a section in the lower half of this one, but right now, this is functional and I have other things to get done. Took an hour to build this one. The pivoting upper bar provides a place to label each saw in its slot and lock all of them in place against falling out. Space for 22 saws, leaving another dozen without a home so far.Charlie Driggs

IMG_3984.JPG210 viewsMade another stairs aw, as the old one wasn't very useful in combination with a fence. Used some of the Galootaclaus mesquite sent by our Rev. Hoyt a few years back (thank you again), and a few furniture bolts as clamps for the blade. Blade was cut from a donor saw and hand filed 12 ppi crosscut. Haven't tried it yet, but a project has been waiting for this for quite a while. Starting to hear a higher pitch on "when is that going to be finished?".Charlie Driggs

handscrew_sawscrew_remover.jpghandscrew clamp modified for sawnuts326 viewsThis works for nearly all sawscrews, and significantly reduces the risk of breaking off medallion screws. Drill a hole in one side of the clamp that is large enough to go around the saw nut -- and allow a screwdriver in to either loosen or tighten. I used a 9/16" Jennings bit on this one, and that works for all but the largest saw nuts.Charlie Driggs
bowsaw_3.jpg
bowsaw_3.jpga new 12" bowsaw125 viewsA few hours of work produced this -- shape is drawn from several designs, none in particular. Woods are sugar (hard) maple for the bows, curly cherry for the stretcher, and mahogany for the nobs and paddle.Charlie Driggs
