Round_trunk.JPGRound trunk296 viewsThis is an 18th century campaign style round trunk. The body is basswood and is constructed around a 12 inch diameter circle, it is 30 inches long, and weighs 21 pounds. The outside is covered in 1-2 ounce black leather, the skirting is 3-4 ounce, and the straps and keepers are 6-8 ounce. The straps and keepers are dyed oxblood.Sgt42RHR

Round_trunk_and_flat_top_trunk.JPG257 viewsI just finished the round trunk. I made it to coordinate with the flat-top trunk I made last year. Sgt42RHR

Linen_lining_installed_and_trimmed-ready_for_the_leather.JPGExterior lining trimmed and ready for leather204 viewsNext step is to adhere the 2-3 ounce black leather to the trunk body--thereby hiding the really nice joinery that went into making this trunk!Sgt42RHR

Hinges_nailed_and_clinched_interior.JPGHinges nailed and clinched interior242 viewsI used pliers to bend the tips, then I put the 4 pound sledge against the nail heads on the outside and drove the point down into the wood and flattened the nail flush with the surface. Nailing and clinching is soooo much stronger than attaching with screws.Sgt42RHR

|

Butterfly_hinges_nailed_on_exterior.JPGButterfly hinges nailed on exterior220 viewsI bent the wings of the butterfly hinges to conform to the 6 inch radius of the trunk body. Marked and drilled 3/32 inch pilot holes for the rosehead nails using a recently restored Millers Falls No. 5 drill. I used the 4 pound sledge hammer as an anvil on the outside to clinch the nails on the inside.Sgt42RHR

Cutting_a_lock_mortise_on_a_round_trunk_body.JPGCutting the lock box mortise220 viewsI used a Stanley No. 71 router plane to excavate the lock box mortise. The round trunk body is 9/16th inch thick, the lock box mortise is 7/16th inch deep. The lock plate is curved to fit the 6 inch radius of the round trunk body.Sgt42RHR
