Zaffutoburnisher2.jpgAnother Zaffuto carbide burnisher111 viewsHandle turned from a length of ornamental plum, sanded to 400 grit, and waxed / buffed with 000 steel wool. Large handle nearly balances the heavy carbide at the other end. Compare to the well used Veritas (LV) burnisher.

Thank you, Tony!!

winding_sticks.jpg
winding_sticks.jpg155 viewsI've had an urge to get another set of winding sticks that would be a little easier to see, but kept putting it off. Then yesterday was doing a little cleanup in the wood stash and found this stick of purpleheart that had been so miserable to work with over a decade ago. Ah-ha, I had a use for it. Still miserable to work it, but now I don't have any of it left. The markers are made from scrap pieces of holly. Much easier to see this pair than the sticks next to them when the lighting is a bit shaded or the eyes are tired.Charlie Driggs

The_Working_Ends.jpg
The_Working_Ends.jpgThe Working Ends112 viewsMuch easier to see the differences in the three corn straw mixes provided for testing in this shot. The most tightly packed and best performing example is third from left. The poorest performing, but still effective example is second from left. The other four showed various degrees of difference between the two, although the two on the right end are made the same way.Charlie Driggs
The_Samples.jpg
The_Samples.jpgThe Working Ends120 viewsSix examples made up using the supplier's standard whisk broom and cake tester designs, with corn straw packed per my request. The supplier is wondering whether buyers would want the somewhat decorative wrapping, as losing it might knock of a dollar or two in price. I say keep it, as it is comfortable in use.Charlie Driggs

2003 was worth every minute of the wait - a Warner & Driggs woodie
2004 Stanley No. 15 try square, and No. 18 bevel gauge; both are well used
2005 Stanley 9-1/2 block plane and an MF chain drill; the comment enclosed leveled me -- a cherished gift
2006 Veritas year: marking gauge, spokeshave kit, striking knife and canvas apron
2007 paper thin turned bowl, tool holders, hand tools book

rockhammer4.jpg
rockhammer4.jpgCompleted rock hammer93 viewsFinished with just a coat of shellac on the handle and wedges, and ready to go. Handle has just a slight curved offset to the left in addition to the curve you can see, making it feel more in line with my arm.Charlie Driggs
rockhammer1.jpg
rockhammer1.jpgRock hammer with half-broken handle -- center of picture136 viewsBrought this hammer home when I cleaned out the family farm in 2004. Wasn't usable even if I had a rock to chip as the handle was half-broken through just below the head. An old hammer in the family, needing some care. Since I had bought a nice new finishing hammer earlier in the day, I figured it was a good time to put that elm branch in the garage to use and rehandle this one too so that my hammers were all up to snuff. Besides, it was a bit stiffling outside .... new handle is shaped and nearly readyCharlie Driggs
Post_Test_Wear_Evidence.jpg
Post_Test_Wear_Evidence.jpgPost-Test Wear Evidence111 viewsthe thick straw example on the bottom performed the best, and showed a little stain of mahogany dust. The thin straw example also worked, but with more effort and time, and a less uniform result. It was apparent that the test only involved part of the face on both.Charlie Driggs
